Lamego \\ Portugal \\ 2002-2007

In 2002, Arquitraço was contacted by Aquapura, Hotels Resort and Spa, SA to design a new concept of luxury Hotel & Spa, in Quinta de Vale Abraão located in the Douro wine region, a place considered by UNESCO as a heritage of Humanity in 2011. Seen from the beginning as a challenge, we tried to recreate a modern area integrated into a preserved region of great historical value in the Portuguese culture. This five-star hotel - open since 2007 - where each room is unique, reflects the tones and textures of the region. The balance between the traditional architecture of a nineteenth century building and its interior design with clean and contemporary profiles, resulted in atmospheres where tranquillity dominates. From its balconies and its large bay windows one gets a stunning outlook over the slopes covered with centenary vineyards, as well as over the imposing river Douro. We are standing before an excellent and unique touristic ensemble. Occupying a total area of 8 hectares, the Aquapura Douro Valley Hotel has 50 rooms and suites, 21 villas, a 2200m ² spa, two restaurants, a bar, a pool bar, a wine-room, a library, an outdoor heated pool, one tennis court, a meeting lounge and a five acre wood. A look at the surrounding landscape shows you that the hotel’s interior blends the colours and textures of the region, bringing to you the different shades of wine and sunshine. All its rooms and suites have modern equipment, one of its highlights being the under-floor heating in bathrooms, showers and spacious and comfortable bathtubs. In 2008, it was considered by national and international reviewers as the best Portuguese hotel and one of the 100 best hotels in Europe.
